Rooms: Whole Home
Features:
This 1940s Wauwatosa home held years of character but limited space. The kitchen was small, storage was tight, and the first floor felt closed off from the rest of the home. The homeowners envisioned a two-story addition that would bring openness, natural light, and modern functionality while preserving the home’s original charm.
The new first floor now includes a spacious kitchen, larger dining room, walk-in pantry, and expanded powder room. By removing walls and reconfiguring the layout, the heart of the home now flows naturally from kitchen to dining to living space. At the center of it all is an eight-foot island that invites gathering. It provides generous prep space, casual seating, and a clear connection to the rest of the main level.
Upstairs, two bedrooms were extended eight feet, giving them proportions more typical of modern homes. The new layouts provide large closets and ample sunlight through added windows, improving both comfort and livability.

Custom cabinetry features glass mullion display doors, decorative corbels, and abundant storage, all topped with timeless quartz countertops. A herringbone tile backsplash and brass-accented lighting introduce subtle character while maintaining a cohesive design.
Every detail was approached with respect for the home’s history. Trim and flooring were custom matched to the existing materials, seamlessly tying new construction into the original architecture. On the exterior, James Hardie plank siding and brick were carefully coordinated so the addition feels as though it has always been part of the home.
From start to finish, this project required careful planning and problem-solving. Tight lot access, existing patio structures, and overhead power lines challenged the construction process, but each obstacle was met with creativity and care.
A ZIP sheathing system provided added protection during unpredictable winter weather, while custom HVAC routing ensured even comfort throughout the expanded second floor. Despite the constraints and the added challenges of COVID-era scheduling, the finished home stands as a testament to skilled craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

This Wauwatosa home addition enhances every aspect of daily living, bringing more light, more function, and a stronger connection across spaces. The reimagined layout now supports both lively family gatherings and quiet, everyday moments with ease.
By preserving the home’s architectural integrity while expanding its comfort and capability, this remodel reflects exactly what the homeowners hoped for. It is a timeless home built for modern life.
